I'm of the age where I can fully complain about how high grocery prices are. One of my biggest complaints is that I can remember when a bag of Hot Cheetos were .99 cents, now, they're like almost three dollars!

A walk down memory lane turned into a serious sticker-shock moment for Zoe Dippel, a Texas woman whose unexpected discovery is now resonating with shoppers across the state, myself included!

Dippel, who lives near Austin, stumbled upon a decades-old H-E-B receipt tucked inside a family photo album. Curious how much that same grocery haul would cost today, she decided to recreate it- and the results quickly caught attention online, especially among Texans.

A Texas Woman’s Old H-E-B Receipt Sparks Sticker Shock

The receipt Dippel found dates back to 1997 and shows a massive 122-item grocery order totaling just $155.34. At first, it was impressive simply for its length, but once the date registered, the price really stood out.

After that video went viral, Dippel recreated the order using H-E-B’s curbside pickup option, selecting the closest modern equivalents when exact matches weren’t available. The updated total came out  to much more than the original; the total came out to $504.11!

How insane is that?

The price jump wasn’t subtle. Everyday staples showed some of the biggest increases, turning what once felt like affordable basics into eye-opening line items.

Items like frozen corn dogs, baby food, diapers, and coffee all cost significantly more than they did in the late ’90s, making the side-by-side comparison especially jarring.

After Dippel shared her comparison on TikTok, the videos quickly went viral, pulling in millions of views and sparking a wave of reactions from fellow Texans.

Why Grocery Sticker Shock Feels So Real Right Now in Texas

While inflation has cooled slightly in recent months, grocery prices remain far higher than they were before the pandemic. For many Texans, that means feeling the squeeze every time they check out.

In the end, Dippel’s viral receipt wasn’t just about numbers,  it was a snapshot of a shared experience.

For Texas shoppers, it confirmed what many already know: groceries don’t cost what they used to, and the sticker shock adds up fast.
