Fans of true crime and podcasts will listen to just about anything.

Serial killers. Missing persons. Con artists. Cult leaders. If there's a podcast about it, chances are someone is binge-listening to all six episodes in a single weekend.

But every now and then a story comes along that makes you stop and say, "Wait, this happened in Texas?" This is one of those stories.

A Wild West Texas Podcast Is Headed To Hollywood

According to Variety, a podcast called The Handyman of West Texas is being developed for the screen.

At first glance, the title sounds pretty harmless. Maybe it's about home improvement. Maybe it's about life in the oil fields.

It is neither of those things

The podcast follows "Mickey," a Midland oilfield laborer who allegedly found himself working as a sex worker for wealthy female clients throughout West Texas. The six-episode series wrapped up earlier this year and quickly caught enough attention to attract Hollywood producers.

Now the story could become either a movie or a television series.

This Texas Story Gets Stranger The More You Learn About It

If you're thinking this sounds less like a true-crime podcast and more like the plot of a premium cable drama, you're not alone.

The podcast's own description says Mickey wasn't just fixing leaky faucets and hanging shutters. It claims he was also helping wealthy West Texas women with a very different kind of home service, one that allegedly left some marriages hanging by a thread!

And somehow, the entire story unfolded against the backdrop of Midland's oil boom culture.

The Creator Has Built A Career On Unbelievable Stories

The man behind the podcast is Johnathan Walton, a former Texas journalist who later found success producing podcasts and television projects.

Walton previously created Queen of the Con, a hit podcast that explored the world of professional scammers and eventually expanded into multiple seasons. He's also worked on podcasts like Cocaine Air and The Quarterback and The Con Artist.

It would seem that finding strange stories seems to be his specialty.

Walton told Variety that he has a knack for uncovering fascinating characters and believes the most compelling stories are often hiding where nobody is looking.

Considering he found a West Texas handyman whose story is now being eyed by Hollywood, he may have a point!

The adaptation is still in the early stages, so producers haven't announced whether it will become a film or a television series. There's also no word yet on casting, filming locations, or when audiences might get to see it.

But one thing is already clear: Texas continues to provide some of the most unbelievable source material in America.
