Governor Announces More Money For Unemployed Texans
The POTUS released 1.4 billion dollars under his new Lost Wage Assistance Executive Order some of it is going to those collecting unemployment.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced last Friday that Texans receiving unemployment benefits will soon be getting an extra $300 per week. It could have been $400 but Texas has elected not to kick in the extra $100 according to the Texas Tribune.
Friday’s approval by the Federal Emergency Management Agency of extra jobless relief comes two weeks after Trump issued an executive order that he said would add $400 to people’s unemployment checks to help them weather life upended by the coronavirus. The White House later clarified that the federal government would provide $300 per week, and states could decide whether they wanted to contribute an additional $100, which Texas does not plan to do. - texastribune.org
Many Texans who lost their jobs and some who saw severe wage cuts have had to dip into their savings to get by following the expiration of the $600 bonus payments unemployed Texans had been getting. Being able to make up for at least part of that is why Governor Abbott is happy to receive and issue the funds but, he didn't authorize paying any additional money. The Texas Tribune article does not give any reason as to why Governor Abbott decided against kicking in the extra $100 in bonus compensation.
