Godsmack have already given us the high-adrenaline autobiographical title track to their '1000hp' album, but they're now giving listeners something a little more gritty with the new song 'Generation Day.'

The track, which can be heard above, opens with some hard-driving guitar work from Tony Rombola, a big-time drum build from Shannon Larkin and continues with some heavy low-end bass from Robbie Merrill. But that's just the beginning as Sully Erna gets to explore multiple styles within the track, delving into a hypnotic bluesy state at moments while delivering powerhouse vocals elsewhere.

Erna tells Grammy.com that 'Generation Day' is one of his favorite tracks on the new album, adding, "'Generation Day' is really unique for me because not only is it this 6 1/2 minute epic, but it has these really cool textures and colors in it. The middle section has this cool, Zeppelin-y kind of breakdown, drifty and trippy. The song has this really fat, cool opening riff, and it's something I almost think we want to open the live show with."

He goes on to add that the track was inspired by his realization that his generation will be among the last to enjoy the "analog world" when it comes to recording. He states, "'Generation Day' is about realizing that this new era is taking over, and one day our generation day will be shot and be dead. Whether that's completely dead or something that's just an underground market -- like there is a small market for vinyl albums now -- [remains to be seen], but when I think about that whole world, I feel sad and wish my daughter and the people [who] are younger could have had that experience of putting on an album and pulling out the lyrics and looking at the artwork. It was such an experience back then."

'Generation Day' is featured on Godsmack's '1000hp' album, which is due on Aug. 5. At present, only the '1000hp' single is available via iTunes, but the full album pre-order is expected to go live tomorrow (July 22). Look for Godsmack on tour beginning Aug. 15 as part of the Rockstar Energy Drink Uproar Festival (see the dates here). Enter to win a '1000hp' prize pack with Uproar tickets below.
