Fun Family Activity- Cut Your Own Christmas Tree In New Mexico

New Mexico is allowing people to purchase permits to cut down their own Christmas trees from New Mexico forests. With so many kids spending their time online and playing video games, some parents might be wondering how they can get them out of the house and enjoy an activity with the entire family. One great way to do that is by heading out into the great outdoors and finding that perfect Christmas tree for your home.

Back in September, we started hearing reports that there would be a shortage of artificial Christmas trees to purchase this holiday season. That has caused the price of artificial trees to go up, just like so many other items this year. Thankfully, you can still get a fresh Christmas tree from the Lincoln National Forest in nearby Ruidoso, New Mexico.

The Lincoln National Forest Christmas Tree permits go on sale this Monday, November 15th for only $10 plus a $2.50 processing fee. These permits are available at the Recreation website. There are other National Forests who are allowing Christmas Tree permits, you can find more about the National Forest website.

If you have a child in the 4th or 5th grade, they could qualify for a free Christmas tree through the Every Kid Outdoors program. Find out more information about that program at the Every Kid Outdoors website.

If you plan to head out and cut down your own Christmas tree this year, make sure you plan ahead for your day trip. Make sure you dress warm since the mountain areas are usually 15 to 20 degrees colder and the weather can change quickly. Call the ranger station before you head out to make sure you are up-to-date on road and weather conditions in the area. Also, pack extra supplies like a first-aid kit, water, and food in case of an emergency.
