Former LAPD Officer Wanted For Murder Arrested

A former LAPD officer wanted for murder and arrested in Mexico is now back on U.S. soil.  Officials say Henry Solis shot and killed a man during fistfight in March in Pomona, and with the help of his father, made his way across the border.

Solis was arrested yesterday while staying with relatives in a neighborhood near Juarez, and is now in El Paso, Texas waiting to be sent back to L.A. to face charges.  Solis' father is also facing charges for allegedly lying to the FBI after helping his son get out of the country, but is said to be cooperating with federal agents.

El Paso's mayor may be losing some of his authority.  A City Council committee is proposing several changes to city government, including abolishing Mayor Oscar Leeser's veto power.  Leeser doesn't like the idea.  He says the office of mayor is already too weak.  Any changes would first have to be approved by voters.

Lawmakers Tentatively Okay "Border Security" Measure

State lawmakers are a step closer to sending more state troopers to patrol the border.  The state Senate yesterday gave preliminary approval to a $310 Million  "Border Security" bill that would pay for the additional troopers.  But critics complain there aren't enough specifics about how the money would be spent.  The bill still faces another vote in the Senate before being sent back to the House.

Court Rules In Favor Of Texas Immigration Challenge

Governor Abbott is hailing a federal appeals court ruling against President Obama's executive orders on immigration.  Yesterday, a three-judge panel refused to order a lower court to allow the immigration orders to proceed.  Texas is leading a coalition of more than two-dozen states that are challenging the President's orders.  Abbott calls the appeals court ruling a "victory for the Constitution."

Compromise Reached On Highway Funding

State legislative leaders have reached a compromise on highway funding.  The agreement calls for a proposed constitutional amendment that would automatically set aside two-and-a-half billion dollars in sales tax money for the state DOT.  The compromise still has to be put to a vote in both the House and Senate.

Former Las Cruces Police Officers To Face Criminal Charges

The two former Las Cruces police officers who were fired for allegedly assaulting a prisoner will face criminal charges.  District Attorney Mark D'Antonio says he's decided to prosecute Richard Garcia and Danny Salcido.  Surveillance video appears to show the officers slamming the handcuffed inmate into a wall last December.  The inmate is now suing the Las Cruces Police Department.
