It's official... An El Pasoan is now a national champion.

Much of the athletic accolades on the national level go to Green Bay Packers running back Aaron Jones, but now it's his cousin who has reached the height of the sports world.

The Burges grad transferred to UConn after starting his collegiate career at East Carolina. It turned out to be a pretty good decision.

In attendance to celebrate him cutting down the nets was his family, including Aaron Jones.

Needless to say, it's time to start talking about more than just Aaron Jones when it comes to El Paso sports royalty. And El Pasoans are taking notice.

The run by UConn to the national championship marks the school's fifth in its history, but this one wasn't predicted by many.

That's right... only about 2% of brackets picked Connecticut to win it all. And the Huskies did it in dominating fashion. The closest game in their six NCAA tournament wins was a 13-point win over Miami in the Final Four.

Here is a look at the Newton family in attendance:

Newton even got a postgame podium interview with Jim Nantz:

Credit to my teammates and my coaches who got me here," Newton said. "It feels great to be a national champion.

Congrats, Tristan Newton! Way to make El Paso proud.
