This weekend, the El Paso Zoo Society opened up its doors after hours to celebrate the first annual Dia De Los Muertos Gala.

Dia De Los Muertos (or the day of the dead) is the annual Mexican holiday that starts on Oct. 31 and runs through Nov. 2, which is aimed to honor the memory of past family members and friends that are celebrated and recognized.

To honor the traditional Dia De Los Muertos celebration, while also recognizing the El Paso Zoo Society's annual Gala, this year's event had a special twist.  The event was aimed to celebrate life—both past and present—including Rudo, the zoo's African Lion who passed away last year. The event also remembered those that our community lost from COVID-19.

The event had a vibrant atmosphere filled with a ton of activities for all the attendees. There were guest appearances by the El Paso Roller Derby, stitlt walkers, Mariachi Plata Band and dancers. There were fortune teller booths and face painting station, along with alabrijes, ofrendas and live art at the event. Guests had a chance to bid on silent auction items as well. Some of the attendees even got a chance to feed the giraffes.
