Solar Parking Lots Would Be Great For El Paso
Welcome to a new series of articles based on stuff I read on the internet that are things El Paso cold use, should avoid, are already doing, etc, etc. First up, solar panels.
Sure, solar panels are not a new idea and El Paso does already have a ton of them scattered all over homes, businesses and some open land. There's another, (better), place for them though that would save the city money and help keep our cars cooler - parking lots.
Solar panels are great and a great idea, especially when it comes to a city like the "Sun City". A well earned nickname for El Paso since we get over 300 days of sunny weather every year. Although, (somehow), some fancy pants dust makes Alamogordo better.
How Could Solar Panels Help El Paso?
There are two benefits to having solar panels all over the place. The first, obviously, is energy production. If we have a zillion solar panels all over the place, the city of El Paso would probably never see another electric bill. They could then pass that savings on to us via lower taxes or start a fund to help everybody get solar panels.
Comfy Cars
Some places put solar panels over open land that could be used for other things like farming or playgrounds. El Paso should build them over parking lots. The land is already unsuitable for, (pretty much), anything else, we totally need them and they could provide a nice fringe benefit by keeping our cars shaded all day.

It may not lower the temp in your car by a ton and it certainly won't make it possible to leave people or pets in your vehicle, (don't leave these things in your car either), but every little bit helps in this heat.
