El Paso’s Unique History With the LA Dodgers & NY Yankees
Yes we know El Paso has a long history with baseball; we've had several different teams come and go while in the MiLB. During our time of having local baseball teams, we've managed to build connections with two of the biggest teams in the MLB; the Los Angeles Dodgers & the New York Yankees.
El Paso's history of the New York Yankees
We know the El Paso CHihuahuas' major league affilate today are the San Diego Padres, but back in the late 30s, the El Paso Texans (before they became the Diablos) were in fact an affiliate for the New York Yankees.
Let's also not forget that the El Paso Texans had a very interesting game for the ages; an exhibition game against the New York Yankees. On April 4, 1951, the Yankees came to play a game at the old Dudley Field against the EP Texans & won 16-10. Names like Joe DiMaggio, Yogi Barra & even a rookie Mickey Mantle all had a great game against the Texans.
Another connection with the Yankees was Robinson Canó who played for the El Paso Chihuahuas back in 2022. He played for the San Diego Padres & won a World Series WITH the Yankees back in 2009.
El Paso's history with the Los Angeles Dodgers
Besides the huge amount of Dodgers fans you'll find in the Sun City, the biggest connection El Paso has had with the Dodgers was back in 1972 when we used to have the El Paso Dodgers (yes the LA Dodgers were our major league affiliate team back in the day). The EP Dodgers had a pretty successful 1972 season; they won the Western Division with a 78-62 record & went on to become Minor League champions. 1972 was the only year we were called the El Paso Dodgers; we would change our names to the El Paso Sun Kings in 1973 & became a California Angels (now Anaheim Angels) affiliate.
The biggest connection of course is just how devout the fanbase in El Paso is FOR the Dodgers; as noted by this the El Paso Times story in 2017. And we love whenever Dodgers players come to town too; like when Cody Bellinger got the EP crowd excited in 2021, even when he was playing for OKC.
El Paso has also seen its share of World Series winners; you can see who won & when they won here.
