El Paso Sector Named Deadliest Spot On The Border
El Paso is consistently ranked as one of the safest cities in the United States of America. Sadly, that doesn't apply to the border between El Paso and Juarez.
The section of the border between the United States of America and Mexico that runs alongside El Paso has been named the deadliest single place on the border. The El Paso sector runs almost 300 miles in west Texas and New Mexico.
The body count along that stretch continues to grow, now standing at nearly 600. In 2022, 71 people died along the border. In 2024, the number jumped to 176.
El Paso is routinely named one of the safest cities in the USA in terms of crime and not all the deaths along the US/Mexico border are crime related. Cartels and gangs do operate along the border and are to blame for some of these deaths but most are caused by the harsh environment.
Almost half are people who did not plan accordingly for the environment and fell victim to exposure, falls or animals. About 100 drowned and over 20 fell trying to scale the border wall.
The El Paso Sector Migrant Death Database maintains a map that tracks the locations of migrant deaths along the border. They are scattered throughout the area, some as far from the border as Albuquerque.
Along the border at El Paso itself, the red dots representing a death become almost a solid color. Young adults, 18-35, make up most of the deaths and men outnumber women except in Dona Ana county where the men/women ratio is almost even.
