Right before, and during, World War II the United States embarked on one of the greatest projects in the history of mankind.

The Manhattan Project as it was called was the United States' effort to develop a bomb based on the burgeoning physics of nuclear radiation.

This project eventually led to the bombs that were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki which ended the greatest war our world had ever seen.

But the hidden facility where these bombs were developed was much closer to El Paso than you might think.

Los Alamos nuclear facility was a top-secret place where the world's greatest scientists gathered to unleash their collective intelligence to eventually create "the bomb."

Strangely enough, as history has proven over and over, smart people make dumb mistakes.

All That's Interesting has an interesting article detailing the history of the Demon Core and the scientists unlucky enough to be slain by the nuclear terror.

When developing the core that would be the "heart" of a nuclear bomb, Harry Daghlian, and Louis Slotin were exposed to lethal amounts of radiation, for just a second, and they eventually died.

That radiation was enough to poison their bodies which led to long and horrible deaths.
