Before the Kansas City Chiefs, They Were a Texas Football Team
We know Texas has a long celebrated history with football. Of course now they have the Dallas Cowboys & the Houston Texans (and of course the Houston Oilers before they became the Tennessee Titans). However the history of NFL Texas football teams ranges all the way back to 1952. That team would be based out of Dallas and is now known today...as the Kansas City Chiefs.
What was the first Texas NFL team?
In 1952, the Dallas Texans would become the very first Texas football team to join the NFL (back then it was the American Football League, aka the AFL). The team was bought by a businessman named Lamar Hunt in hopes to start a franchise in Texas. The Texas were... well there's no way to say it... they were bad during their very first season.
They would only have 1 win that season; they would beat the bears 27-23. They would finish that season with a record of 1-11.
In 1960 there would be TWO teams from Dallas: the Texans and the Cowboys. Things would improve coming back to the NFL; they would have an 8-6 record in 1960 & a 6-8 record in 1961. But the best was yet to come...
When would the Dallas Texans become the Kansas City Chiefs?
In 1962, the Texans would have a better season. A MUCH better season. Being in the same same division as the Denver Broncos, San Diego Chargers & the Oakland Raiders, Dallas would make the playoffs with an 11-3 record, claiming the division. They would face off against the Houston Oilers in the AFL Championship game and WIN. 20-17. It would be the Dallas Texans only championship.
The next year, Lamar would relocate to Kansas City & rename them. The Dallas Texans would become...The Kansas City Chiefs. And for over 60 years the Chiefs have kept the name and win 3 more NFL championships (aka Super Bowls): in 1969, 2019 & 2022.
And of course the Dallas Cowboys would win THEIR share of Super Bowls: 5 to be precise. So both the Chiefs and the Cowboys would do pretty well since the name change.
Of course it's not uncommon for teams to relocate or change cities, but now we know that the Chiefs have a little more connection to Texas than we thought...
