Texas World Cup Security Is Going Full Sci-Fi
The countdown is almost over.
After years of waiting, planning, and watching the clock, the 2026 FIFA World Cup is finally just days away. Fans are getting ready for packed stadiums, watch parties, and what could be one of the biggest sporting events ever hosted in North America.
But it turns out soccer isn't the only thing arriving in Texas.
The World Cup Is Bringing Robot Dogs To Texas
As if hosting the world's biggest sporting event wasn't enough, the World Cup is also bringing some surprisingly futuristic security measures to the Lone Star State.
Hyundai and Boston Dynamics have announced that their four-legged robotic "Spot" robots will be used during World Cup operations. Two of the robots will be stationed at the International Broadcast Center in Dallas, where much of the tournament's global coverage will be coordinated and distributed.
Before anyone starts worrying about robot dogs checking tickets or judging their choice of team jersey, that's not their job.
The robots are designed to help security teams patrol large areas, monitor locations that may be difficult to access, and investigate potentially hazardous situations without putting people at risk. Equipped with cameras and sensors, they can gather information and provide an extra set of eyes for security personnel.
In other words, they're less "robot police dog" and more "very expensive security assistant."
Texas Is At The Center Of The World Cup
The robot dogs may be grabbing headlines, but they're also a reminder of just how important Texas will be during the tournament.
AT&T Stadium, which FIFA will refer to as Dallas Stadium during the World Cup, is scheduled to host nine matches- more than any other venue in the tournament. Dallas is also home to the International Broadcast Center, which will help send World Cup coverage to viewers around the globe.
That means Texas won't just be hosting games. It'll be helping power much of the tournament itself.
If you had told me a few years ago that Texas would be preparing for the World Cup with robot dogs helping security teams, I probably would've assumed you were describing a movie.
Instead, it's just another part of getting ready for the biggest soccer tournament on Earth!
