71 years ago today, 150,000 troops stormed Omaha Beach and changed the course of WW II.

Some people don't know much about that day or the impact it had on history so, here are a few facts about D-Day. My thanks to the men and women involved with that operation and also to all the brave men and women who today serve in the United States Army, Air Force, Marine Corps, Navy and Coast Guard.

  • Why D-Day? One theory, the operation was so secret that theory is all we have on some aspects, is that it was a generic term used for operations with no set date. D for Day, H for Hour, etc.
  • Over 150,000 troops crossed the English Channel that day by sea and air.
  • 100,000 of those troops actually fought and about 29,000 Americans were killed.
  • A dummy force of rubber boats and plywood tanks was constructed near Dover to fool the Germans and keep their attention off the real force.
  • The invasion was originally set for June 5th but was postponed because weather on the 6th was forecast to be better. It was just as bad, if not worse.

Thanks again to all who have served or currently serve. God bless you all.
