The Sheriff of Douglas County, Oregon -- where a shooting at a community college left 10 dead and more than seven injured -- refused to use the shooter's name in press conferences. Sheriff John Hanlin says he doesn't want to give the shooter any notoriety.

I like that. Why should this jerk get 15 minutes of fame? He didn't do anything deserving of fame. He didn't even do anything deserving of INFAMY. Infamy should be reserved for evil-doers who had historical significance. These limp-dicks who shoot up a bunch of innocent and unarmed strangers deserve only obscurity.

So, I'm on board with this idea of ignoring the identity of the shooters. Let's focus our attention on the victims and the survivors and their families. If we need a name to attach to this latest senseless act, I have a suggestion. Let's make it this guy:

That's U.S. Army veteran Chris Mintz and according to witnesses, he stood in the way of the gunman trying to protect others. He took seven bullets because of his actions. Oh, and this is a photo from his hospital bed today:

That's right. American Hero Chris Mintz was smiling from his hospital after being shot seven times by a cowardly ass-pump. He even gave a statement to the media: "I just hope that everyone else is OK."

Chris Mintz did 10 years service in the Army and was taking classes at Umpqua Community College to become a fitness instructor. Something tells me it will be a lot harder for his future clients to complain about how sore their muscles are after doing an extra rep knowing their trainer took 50 Cent levels of lead trying to protect strangers.

There aren't really super villains in our world. The real-world versions of Doctor Doom or Lex Luthor are sad, pathetic losers who deal with their own inadequacies by trying to make the world as miserable as they are.

But, there ARE real super heroes. People like Chris Mintz whose reaction to evil is to confront it and think of his fellow man before himself. Chris Mintz is a superhero and his superpower is a willingness to put himself at risk without having an iron suit or impenetrable green skin. Maybe we can't all be Chris Mintz, but we can make sure that it's people like him whose names we remember and not the bad guy. Whatever his name is.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help assist with Chris Mintz's medical expenses and to help him as he recovers.
