Chavez-Lee Fight Canceled in Sun Bowl: Conspiracy or Safety Concerns? [POLL/VIDEO]
Top Rank Inc. CEO Bob Arum came to town yesterday to promote the big June 16th middleweight championship fight between Mexican champion Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. and Irish contender Andy Lee. Except that, according to Arum, the University of Texas System nixed the Sun Bowl as the venue about an hour before his press conference. Or did they...?
Our buddy, Steve Kaplowitz, was at Arum's press conference and has a number of thoughts on this, too. You can also see Steve's video of it below the poll.
Interestingly, El Paso heavyweight contender, David Rodriguez, told the KLAQ Morning Show that he heard the fight was going to be canceled when promoters saw the bad turnout for the Showtime championship boxing card at the Don Haskins Center last Saturday. Maybe a certain promoter figures he'd lose $XX million so he decides to make a donation to the UT System for $X million if they take the rap for canceling the fight.
How this explains Western Refining CEO Paul L. Foster saying he's heard the reasons behind the UT System's decision and thinks it's appropriate, we don't know.
What do you think?
