Drivers Stunned as Cows Roam Free on Busy Texas Highway
It's something that seems like it can only happen in the Lone Star state as a herd of loose livestock caused quite a traffic delay when they ran through vehicles along Interstate 45 near Spring Stuebner on Monday in Houston, Texas.
Forget the running of the bulls in Pamploma, how about the running of the cattle in Texas? Officials say they initially got reports that 30 steer got loose after a trailer's gate became unlatched; the trailer was hauling the roping steers after an appearance at the rodeo. Thankfully, it turned out that it was only six steer that got loose- although that was still a sight to behold for commuters who were at a standstill as the cattle weaved in and out of the cars.
Several agencies, including the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and Harris County Pct. 4 Constable’s Office responded to help wrangle the cattle.
Traffic was a mess for hours, and to make things worst, officials said these were roping cows, so they are specifically trained to avoid getting caught- which explains the poor officers trying their best, and failing, to gather the cows!
The cows were on the way to North Texas, and while it was a funny scene, it was not without tragedy; the Harris County Sheriff's Office reports one cow was hit, and a vehicle was overturned. After about four hours on the loose, all six cows were finally accounted for and returned, happily on their way to their next destination.
On the upside, the Harris County Sheriff's Office actually has a livestock unit with deputies who are trained to handle incidents just like this- yup, only in Texas!
