5 Amazing Guitar Solos That Define Lone Star Legends
Texas has given us some incredible guitarists that have become some of the best in the world. While it's impossible to pick the BEST guitar solo from these bands, we can definitely pick OUR favorite solos & that's what we've done here:
ZZ Top - La Grange
You can't have a list about greatest guitar solos without mentioning Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top out of Houston, TX. With over 50 years worth of material to choose from, you can easily make a case for any song for having their best solo. However I think that we can all agree that the solo in "La Grange" is just...chef's kiss. Guitar World also would agree with this sentiment...
Eric Johnson - Cliffs of Dover
You know a song is good (let alone an instrumental) when it wins a GRAMMY & that's what the Austin guitarist, Eric Johnson, did with his incredible piece "Cliffs of Dover". It's definitely become his most well-known song but it's a classic that guitarists love to listen & play along to. Or try to at least...
Stevie Ray Vaughan - Texas Flood
Dallas' Stevie Ray Vaughan may have left this world way too soon, but his music is still beloved by many music fans today. While it IS worth noting that Stevie appeared on Guitar World's Top 50 greatest solos (his song "Lenny" appeared at #35), we wanted to include his incredibly emotional bluesy solo from the album's title track, "Texas Flood". You can really hear the sounds of pain coming from Stevie's playing.

Freddie King - Have You Ever Loved a Woman
You can't talk about Texas guitar heroes without mentioning one of the "Three Kings of Blues Music"; Freddie King out of Gilmer, Texas. Any of his songs can be picked as the best but we love his solo on Have You Ever Loved a Woman the best.
Pantera - Domination
Picking the perfect Dimebag Darrell solo is nearly impossible; songs like Cowboys From Hell, Walk, Floods, I'm Broken are timeless classics. But we included Domination because we truly believe that if wasn't for Dimebag's absolutely mental playing, the world of metal music would never be the same.
Other amazing guitar solos that are worth mentioning include:
- Beaumont's Edgar Winter - Frankenstein
- El Paso's The Mars Volta - Cygnus...Vismund Cygnus (Omar-Rodriguez Lopez)
- San Antonio's Butthole Surfers - 22 Going On 23 (Paul Leary)
- Fort Worth's Toadies - Away (Darrel Herbert)
- Dallas' Reverend Horton Heat - Galaxy 500 (Jim Heath)
