Base Jumper 2nd To Die In Arizona’s Grand Canyon
Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona claimed 2 more lives in 2 consecutive days. The second was a base jumper attempting an illegal jump.
Grand Canyon National Park, located less than 300 miles from Phoenix, is a breathtakingly beautiful park that's earned a dubious honor ... it has been named the nations deadliest national park.
Texas has 2 of the deadliest parks in the USA but the Grand Canyon is totally in first place and two more, back to back, deaths there just further locked down its #1 status.
July 31st, a 20 year old man fell about 400 feet to his death from the edge of the canyon. That one is considered, at the time of this writing, to be an accident. The next day, a BASE jumper leapt to his death.
According to a statement released by the park, rangers received a report around 7:30 a.m. Thursday about someone attempting to BASE jump from Yavapai Point on the South Rim. BASE jumping is a risky form of parachuting in which participants leap from fixed points like bridges or cliffs. BASE stands for the four types of objects participants typically leap from: buildings, antennas, spans or earth. - sfgate.com
While his parachute did open, he was still found dead about 500 feet below the edge. BASE jumping is not legal ANYWHERE in Grand Canyon National Park. Skydiving over the grand canyon is allowed.
You can arrange a jump here. If you have the proper training, you can do your own thing. If not, tandem skydives ... where you're "attached" to a pro skydiver ... are available.
