Several EPISD schools have earned a special designation from the United States Military.

7 schools in the El Paso Independent School District were just awarded a special designation by the United States Military marking them as "Purple Star Campuses". This status recognizes schools that have gone above and beyond in their efforts to show support and commitment to addressing the special and unique needs of both students and families with military connections.

Life in a military household can present great demands on the members of the family, most especially school-age children who face new and ever-changing conditions due to the transitory nature of the military as well as the difficulties associated with new environments, meeting new people, making new friends and learning new protocols. Not to mention dealing with military rules, customs, and policies, among (many) other things.

The El Paso Independent School district schools being recognized as "Purple Star Campuses" are Chapin High School, Austin High School, Ross Middle School, Bliss Elementary School, Hughey Elementary School, Logan Elementary School, and Nixon Elementary School. (EPHP) All these schools are, for fairly obvious reasons, located in the Northeast and Central parts of town where they are closest to Fort Bliss. One of them, Bliss Elementary school, is actually on the post.
