Texas School Districts Graded For 1st Time In Years, EPISD – “Eh”
For the first time in 5 years, Texas graded its school districts on an A - F scale, same as they do their students, and EPISD didn't get an "A".
The Texas Education Agency was allowed to release the results after an almost 2 year court battle over how the results are achieved. Only the 2022 - 2023 results have been released, 2023 - 2024 results are still hung in court.
The El Paso Independent School District didn't do too hot but, for what it's worth, its on par with most of the rest of the Texas districts.
73% of the school districts in Texas got a "B" or a "C" with EPISD being a "C" student. The Fort Worth School District seems to be the worst with one school in danger of being either closed or placed under a state takeover.
How Were Schools Ranked?
The Texas Education Agency used 3 criteria to grade the schools:
- Student achievement: How well students perform on state standardized tests and their readiness for college/careers. New rules put higher standards for A's here which ... I assume ... is where all the legal crap started
- School progress: How students are improving on state tests
- Closing the gaps: How well schools are boosting scores for specific groups like special needs kids or those who don't speak English (texastribune)
70% of the grade is determined by the better score between student achievement and school progress. The rest comes from the closing the gaps category. I can see how this wound up in court ...
How Did El Paso Do?
Note - The ranker gives the grade but no explanation as to how it was earned. You can look up other school districts here.
