It's no secret that El Paso is a hotbed of paranormal activity. El Paso has so many haunted places, from schools and restaurants all across the city to old fire stations to dozens of buildings downtown, where you can come across ghostly apparitions that will scare the living daylights out of just about anyone. I often joke that El Paso should be nicknamed The Old Haunted City By the Rio Grande because it's true.

If you love a good haunting, you should check out these five paranormal hot spots around El Paso, which are guaranteed to send chills up your spine.

#1 El Paso High School

While there are many haunted schools around the region, there is only one dubbed the most haunted high school in America, and that is the Lady on the Hill, better known as El Paso High School.  According to the school’s haunted lore, in 1922, a teenage girl committed suicide by slitting her wrists and throwing herself off one of the school's balconies. After the tragic incident, the school received several reports of this "ghostly image," so they decided to build a wall that blocked the haunted hallway completely. But by the looks of it, the wall did nothing to deter the ghostly apparition. Ghost Girl is the most active of the alleged ghosts and is usually photographed standing or looking out the windows of the 100+-year-old high school.

#2 Fire Station #9 & #11

Two fire stations in El Paso have been named some of the most haunted in America by Fire Rescue 1, including Fire Stations #9 and #11.

Fire Station #9, located on Dallas St., is haunted by the spirit of Woodard Bloxom, a fire captain who died in 1934 battling a warehouse fire across the street. Often unexplainable events occur, which include moved furniture and doorknobs turning on their own. Witnesses also say that right before the dispatch center calls, the ghost of Bloxom alerts firefighters by opening the bay door or switching the lights on and flushing toilets to get their attention.

Fire Station  #11, located in downtown El Paso is so scary that some firefighters have difficulty sleeping over. The fire station is said to be so haunted that firefighters have reported beds shaking in the middle of the night, covers pulled off when they sleep, and feeling the presence of someone looming over them of whoever haunts the fire station.

#3 Concordia Cemetery

Another of the most haunted hot spots in the city is Concordia Cemetery, known for its bevy of paranormal activity. Steeped in history and dating back to the mid-1850s, Concordia Cemetery is estimated to hold over 60,000 gravesites with many Buffalo Soldiers, Chinese railroad workers, Freemasons, and the burial place of the Old West lawmen and several gunslingers, including John Wesley Hardin. One of the most curious haunted stories is that of a dark ghostly figure captured in photos over the last few years at Concordia Cemetery. Some say the apparition may be an evil entity, time traveler, an interdimensional being, or an alien. Whatever you want to call it, the dark ghostly figure remains a mystery to this day.

#4 Haunted Road

El Paosoans say that a street between Clint and Fabens on Alameda Avenue called Leisure Lane has a gruesome backstory. This intersection is said to be haunted by a tormented pastor, who killed his wife and child by cutting off their heads and dumping them in a nearby water tower, and then ended the grisly task by hanging himself. The ghost of this man haunts the area to this day and plagues motorists by jumping onto car hoods and terrifying commuters.

#5 Plaza Theatre

The 91-year-old Plaza Theatre is another location where El Pasoans will likely run into an apparition of sorts.  I once visited the theatre for a movie screening and arrived early and was sitting by myself when I felt something caress the back of my head and hair. Soon after that spine-tingling moment, I learned that the Plaza Theatre is said to be haunted by a man in uniform who fell off the second floor back in the 1940s. Some say they have seen this man sitting on the mezzanine smoking a cigarette near the staircase.
