You Asked for It: My Mom’s Recipe for Chex Mix
The results are in! A twitter user asked people to vote on “the best piece in Chex Mix” and the winner was a bombshell! With over 7,000 votes (seriously) America has proclaimed “rye chip” to be the best piece of Chex Mix! Who saw that coming, am I right? The other pieces were: mini breadstick, square pretzel, corn Chex, wheat Chex and circle pretzel. The rye chips are the brown chips that kind of look like a tiny little saddle for the world’s smallest horse. They do, in fact, rock.
This got Brandon and I talking about how Chex Mix can’t hold a candle to HOMEMADE Chex Mix. My mom makes the BEST Chex Mix. She uses pecans and when they are fresh out of the oven there’s nothing better. Mom was kind enough to share her recipe with Joanna, who shared it with me. And now, I’m sharing it with you. You’re welcome.
Shirley’s Party Mix
5 Cups Corn Chex
5 Cups Wheat Chex
1 1/2 – 2 Cups Pecans
Stick Prezels
1 Teaspoon Season Salt
1 ½ tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
One stick butter
Melt butter and mix with Worcestershire sauce
Mix together / coat mix with sauce
Bake at 250 degrees for one hour/ stir every 15 minutes
Mom also confirmed my suspicion that her homemade Chex Mix is primarily a cold weather treat. She says she starts making it in October and has it out for the holidays.
Also, when she wants to REALLY switch things up, she’ll throw in some Cheerios. The Cheerios, in my opinion, don’t ruin the Chex Mix…but they don’t add anything either.
Here’s the audio version of Mom’s recipe for the visually impaired. Enjoy
