A local bar marquee says you shouldn't trust anyone who won't take a shot with you, but why?

Why shouldn't you trust anyone who won't have a drink with you? I thought about this as I waited for the red light to change green on the corner of Mesa and Cinncinnati street.

As I pondered the statement, I immediately thought about my friends and relatives who have struggled with alcoholism all their lives. Some have gotten help and have turned their lives around but continue to struggle every day to avoid temptation. So these folks are exempt from accepting your shot offer.

But this statement doesn't apply to them; it's talking about folks in attendance at the bar who are drinking with you but won't partake because they fear the "Tequila Blackout."

Have you ever gone out with your friends, and everything was fun and happy until you started having tequila shots, and someone ends up getting crazy angry and fighting everyone?

We've all been there. The thing is that the tequila isn't to blame. There is no ingredient in tequila that makes people violent; it's the way folks are consuming it. Tequila should be sipped and savored as a relaxant, not taken as a shot.

Tequila will get you drunk faster when consumed as a shot because it generally contains 40% ethanol, whereas a beer has only about 5%. So when you take 3 or 4 tequila shots in a short period along with beer or other drinks, the chances are that you will get crazy drunk real fast.

As I thought more about the quote, I realized what it's saying is that folks who won't cheer with a shot are unwilling to bring their guard down since alcohol diminishes people's inhibitions. These folks are afraid to show their true side, especially since people will often reveal their true thoughts and feelings when drinking, and they might reveal too much if they accept your offer.

So should you trust someone who won't take a shot of tequila with you? I say trust them because you don't know how intoxicated someone might already be, or they may just not like tequila overall. Instead, try asking them if they prefer a different type of shot, especially if they fear the "Tequila Blackout" and are trying to avoid a crazy night of debauchery and embarrassment or, worse, a DWI.

So don't get offended - sip on that tequila very slowly and enjoy the moment.
