Who In El Paso Remembers Seeing the Flowing Hot Lava by Asarco?

A long time ago when the Asarco Smokestacks still existed the coolest thing used to happen at night. It was about 30 years ago that I remember seeing the most gnarly sight ever.

The only time you could see it was when you would be cruising down I-10 East or West by Executive Center. I remember I was about 5-years-old and I always enjoyed it when my dad would take I-10 because of the magnificent view of lava.

Whether you would be driving on I-10 between Shuster and Executive Center you would notice bright orange lava flowing over the rocky hill. Not sure how many remember this but I sure as hell do.

As a child, I remember I used to play pretend in the backseat escaping a volcano eruption in Hawaii. I guess that explains all the black dark coal that you see lying around near the border highway.

It was so neat to see that sight in the evening as you were driving by. Unfortunately, you didn't have a long view of it since you got to go fast on the freeway.

All I can say is I am glad I got to enjoy that view as a kid because I could stare as long as I wanted. The best time to see the bright orange lava flowing down the hill was at night. The day they announced the demolition of the Asarco Smokestacks a part of me was devastated.

The Asarco Smokestacks were always where the villain lived in my pretend world. All I can say is I am glad I used my imagination and was not glued to electronics like some kids now.
