Over the last few weeks, the demolition of the original Jefferson High School building has been taking place in stages to make way for a new state-of-the-art campus which is now actively open to students and staff.

The modern facility features a new cafeteria, library, and science labs. Other amenities include a new athletics weight room, renovations to the auxiliary gym, new softball and baseball fields, and school bus loops with the original site of the building serving as a new parking lot next to the new 3-story school campus.

But now, as Jefferson High School is being demolished and transformed into a parking lot, what will happen to the ghosts?

In case you didn't know, Jefferson High School, like the dozens of other schools in the El Paso region, is haunted, or so they say.

Whether you are a believer or not, El Paso is one of the most haunted cities in America and according to the book by Dennis William Hauck titled Haunted Places: The National Directory: Ghostly Abodes, Sacred Sites, UFO Landings, and Other Supernatural Locations, the high school is where the devil once appeared to students in 1947, a couple of years before the school fully opened as Jefferson High (formerly Burleson Elementary).

According to the stories, several instances of apparitions and encounters have baffled students and staff throughout the years.

Creepy stories tell of different ghostly girls who appear, float, and vanish into thin air along the canal behind the school, in the old band room, ROTC building, and on staircases of the main building.

Other stories include portals, the apparitions of Vietnam Vets, whispers, and even reports from a night shift security supervisor at the hospital who would often see shadows through the school's windows after hours across the street.

If that's not enough, other stories tell of staff hearing a ball bouncing and giggling near the main office believing it was from a little girl who died in an accident near the school in 1974.

There are also stories of paranormal activity in the locker rooms and the apparition of a little boy in the small gym. The former building was so scary that the custodians sometimes refused to enter areas like the library and the home economics room after dark.

So where will all these resident ghosts go now? Will they linger over the parking lot, or will they take up residence at the new campus?

According to the Paso del Norte Paranormal Society, the consensus is that spirits tend to stay at a location even if the haunted building gets torn down - so it sounds like they might be sticking around.

Perhaps blessing the area might help these lost souls go towards the light as they say, but until then, the resident ghost of Jefferson High School will linger for years to come.
