This was a scary, scary scene in El Paso yesterday. A cement truck was barreling down Transmountain, eventually colliding with the trailer of a semi-truck. The video was caught by Jonathan Nava Galvan just before 9:00am. The cement truck was heading west on Transmountain when it collided with the trailer near N. Desert Blvd.

As of now, not much is known about the accident other than what the video shows as officials haven't provided any information. Based on the footage from Galvan's video, the cement truck appeared to be a runaway vehicle, as it doesn't look like it even attempted to stop. One person was killed in the collision, but officials have yet to name that person.

This is one of the scariest things that can happen on the road because it's completely unexpected. Just stop and think how easily you go through an intersection when your light turns green, not thinking much of what's going on. Now throw into how many people are buried in their phones and distracted while driving and it can be horrifying. Here are a couple statistics to remember the next time you want to check your phone while driving:

  • It takes about 5 seconds to check your phone. If you're going 55 mph, your car will travel the length of a football field in that time.
  • 25% of accidents are caused by drivers distracted by cell phones or mobile devices. (This one actually seems a bit low)

Please take this as a cautionary tale. We still aren't sure what caused this accident with the cement truck, but you can still do what you can to make the roads safer. Put the phone down and pay attention.
