Beans Have Absolutely No Place in Chili if You Live in Texas
Have I been eating chili wrong this whole time?! Apparently I've been breaking this one cardinal rule about chili in Texas!
We have had a lot of discussions recently on the Morning Show surrounding chili; specifically how much we all love that chili from Wendy's! It's probably one of the best fast food chili's out there!
Of course, some did call in to say that other great El Paso restaurants, like Frisco Burger, have some pretty good chili, which I don't doubt! But then we found out that the Wendy's chili will soon be sold at stores and that was a game changer!
While trying to figure when I can expect to see these canned Wendy's chili in my stores, I came across something that I didn't even think about; apparently in Texas, you don't put beans in your chili! What?!
Now, I grew up in a Mexican household, so chili wasn't exactly a staple in our house; the times we would eat chili it was either from Wendy's or a restaurant. Evidently, those places didn't get the memo that there shouldn't be beans in chili because I can assure you that they totally put beans in their chili!
According to the Daily Meal there is a saying: "If you know beans about chili, you know chili ain't got no beans." Also, in Texas, which is where they say chili really originated from sans beans, you ask for a "bowl of red" and they know immediately that it means chili with no beans!
Okay, I didn't know that was a thing! I am aware that they sell cans of chili and you have the option of beans or no beans; but never did I think that in Texas you aren't supposed to eat it with beans!
I like beans in my chili, so I guess that makes me a little less than authentic Texan, but I also eat my chili with sour cream and aside of cornbread; now if you tell me not to add cornbread then we're going to have a problem.
