Revisiting the Day When 2 Texas Wrestling Icons Rocked El Paso
The world of wrestling is full of iconic names...The Rock, Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Heartbreak Kid, The Undertaker. The list goes on & on...and you travel to Texas, that list gets even bigger. Without a doubt two of the biggest names to come out of Texas were Terry Funk from Amarillo & Gory Guerrero from El Paso (the father of Eddie, Chavo, Mando & Hector Guerrero). And one night... the two legends would fight in the square circle on the same night at the El Paso County Coliseum.
When did Gory Guerrero & Terry Funk wrestler in El Paso Texas?
The date was November 20th, 1967 during an Amarillo Wrestling sanctioned event held at the El Paso County Coliseum. You can see the classic newspaper clipping that was uploaded online below (hence the low quality).
Only a total of 4 matches would take place (the winners of the match would be bolded):
- Pancho Pico vs Tony Baretta
- Gory Guerrero vs Koa Tiki.
- Terry Funk vs Dick Murdoch.
- Kurt Von Brauner & Karl Von Brauner vs Ricky Romero & Luis Hernandez
Yes Gory & Terry would each win their respective matches; Terry at the young age of 23 years old & Gory who was twice his age at 46 years old.
This wasn't the first time Gory & Terry would fight together.
Both being part of Funk Amarillo Wrestling, both wrestlers were fully aware of each other; Gory would train with Terry's father, Dory Funk Sr & his brother, Dory Funk Jr. While Gory & Terry wouldn't share many televised matches together, Terry would have plenty with the Gory's son, the late Eddie Guerrero.
We would tragically lose Gory Guerrero on April 18, 1990 at the age of 69. He would later be inducted into the El Paso Athletic Hall of Fame posthumously in 2021; the first pro wrestler to be inducted.
Terry would be inducted into many wrestling hall of fames including the WWE Hall of Fame in 2009 alongside many fellow Texas wrestlers like Stone Cold, The Undertaker & as mentioned before, Eddie Guerrero. Terry Funk would tragically pass away at the age of 79 on August 23rd, 2023...
While I would've loved to see both of these legends more in El Paso, November 20th, 1967 will no doubt live in the hearts of wrestling fans in El Paso.
R.I.P. Gory Guerrero & Terry Funk
