Target Will Now Be Closed On Thanksgiving
After the Walmart company announced they would be giving their employees Thanksgiving off, looks like the Target Company is following suit. Since March, many essential workers have been working their jobs nonstop and it's safe to say they deserve a break. Walmart made the announcement last week in a memo to employees that they would be closing on Thanksgiving this year for the first time since the late 1980s, according to USA Today. Target made the announcement they would also be closed for the holiday in an announcement on their website, but not because their employees deserve it. The company acknowledged that the holiday shopping season will be very different due to the coronavirus pandemic, and they were implementing changes to deal with people's changing shopping needs.
Target says they will be making changes to their holiday plans because the country is still in the middle of the pandemic, and will most likely continue to be for the rest of the year. Some of those changes include starting their holiday deals earlier than ever before, offering the discount and deals in-store and online, offering over 20,000 items available for pick-up and delivery, and closing on Thanksgiving Day. The idea to close Walmarts on Thanksgiving this year was suggested by a worker at a Texas store, but most likely he wasn't the only Walmart employee who thinks closing on Thanksgiving is a good idea. Walmart U.S. President and CEO John Furner credited Round Rock Walmart employee Kevin Carlyle for submitting the suggestion. Furner said the company realizes how its employees stepped up during this pandemic and want them to enjoy their Thanksgiving at home with the loved ones. According to a news release, Walmart and Sam's Club stores will operate on normal hours the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, then be closed Thanksgiving Day. The company says their hours of operation for Black Friday will be announced at a later date. Sam's Club traditionally remains closed on Thanksgiving Day, but Walmart stores are usually open for those last-minute needs on a holiday. The closure of Walmarts on Thanksgiving Day is only for 2020, but maybe if they get such good press from this decision they may make it permanent.
