San Elizario Man an Amazing Farmer Growing Food for Our Future

A man in San Elizario in innovating farming techniques because of global warming. Now he's created something from nothing in the Chihuahuan desert.

A new report from El Paso Matters highlights someone born and bred in San Elizario:

"Lorenzo Luevano was born and raised in San Elizario and got his first taste of agriculture at a young age when his grandmother introduced him to gardening. Now in his late 20s, Luevano serves as the city’s agriculture manager, teaching residents in this low-income community how to grow their own fruits and vegetables in desert conditions."

San Elizario isn't considered part of the lower valley for nothing. Its fertile farmlands and wide fields make it the bread basket of El Paso.

But Lorenzo thought about global warming and how food will be grown in the future and decided to try growing something from nothing in the Chihuahuan desert.

“It’s just a matter of finding different techniques and different solutions to help the plants grow..." Luevano Said

“You see on the news that a lot of cities — a lot of states — are running out of water. Down the line, in five to 10 years, how is that problem going to be bigger? And if there’s a solution, what solution is there on the table for us to help that situation?”

Desert farming might not be a thing now but maybe in the future, it will be.
