New Mexico State Police are about to really bring the hammer down on drunk drivers. Heads up if you plan to party in Chaparral, Las Cruces or anywhere else in NM.

Starting in March, New Mexico State Police are cracking down on impaired drivers with checkpoints not only in the above mentioned cities but all across the state.

Drinking and driving isn't smart to begin with and the penalties for getting caught can cost you your money, your freedom and/or cost you or someone else their life. Don't do it.

You especially don't want to do it in New Mexico as they are all about catching drunk drivers these days. NM stats on drunk driver related issues are pretty up there and, with Spring Break coming up, the law is cracking down.

  • New Mexico has the second-highest rate of drunk drivers under age 21 involved in fatal crashes (0.96 per 100,000 licensed drivers), ranking seventh among the worst states for drunk driving.
  • The Land of Enchantment stands out as the state with the fourth-highest proportion of drunk drivers involved in fatal crashes (7.81 per 100,000 licensed drivers).
  • The state has the fourth-highest rate of people killed in crashes involving a drunk driver (6 per 100,000 state residents). - Forbes

To try and stop, or at least greatly reduce, the number of DWI related accidents, state police all across the land of enchantment are going to start setting up DWI checkpoints.

In addition to the sobriety checkpoints, saturation patrols will be sent to counties with the highest DUI frequencies.

State police will also be implementing registration, insurance, and drivers license checkpoints as well. - KVIA
