It's a saying every Texan should know: "Don't Mess With Texas." It's a phrase we've used since the mid-80s to tell people, "Hey! Don't litter in our state! Thanks." Names like Ethan Hawke, Joe Jonas, Eva Longoria, and even Stevie Ray Vaughan have all been used as celebrity spokespeople during the campaign.

Oh and let's not forget Matthew McConaughey from Ulvade, TX. He was also featured on a "DMWT" commercial; one that was banned from being shown on television.

If you don't remember, here's Matthew McConaughey's 2000 Don't Mess With Texas commercial.

After watching that commercial you can PROBABLY see why people didn't like this one. I'll admit Matthew's laugh at the end is highly infectious but the image of a man being shot with a blow dart and then being taken OUT of the state because of his littering? Yeah...that probably was the reason.

Believe it or not, the commercial that was banned was actually uploaded onto YouTube by one of the actors; the man who got shot WITH the blow dart. He said in the video's description that the commercial DID get played a little bit on television (and even before some R-rated movies in the theater) before it was pulled for being "too violent".

Did Matthew McConaughey do another Don't Mess With Texas commercial?

Yes, he did. He's starred in a few more commercials that DID make it onto television. Including this one where he starred alongside Chuck Norris, Owen Wilson & Jennifer Love Hewitt.

There's also the more recent commercial that aired back in 2020 during the Pandemic.

As much as I liked the ones that came after the banned one, you have to admit... it IS effective! It definitely got its message across.
