12 El Paso Places That Deserve To Be Historical Landmarks
El Paso has no shortage of iconic landmarks. We have the Star on the Mountain, the Plaza Theatre, San Jacinto Plaza and plenty of other places that immediately come to mind when you think of the Sun City.
But what about the places that have absolutely no plaque, historical designation or fancy title... and yet every El Pasoan knows exactly what you're talking about?
That's what I wanted to know, so I asked our Facebook followers which El Paso places should be considered landmarks?
Naturally, El Pasoans had opinions!

El Pasoans Pick the Places That Deserve Landmark Status
Some answers were nostalgic. Some were places that have become part of everyday life in El Paso. Others were the kind of answers that made me immediately think, you know what... they're right!
After going through all the responses, I rounded up 12 of the most beloved and recognizable picks.
They may not all be official landmarks, but according to El Paso, they might as well be.

Some Very El Paso Honorable Mentions
Of course, narrowing this down to 12 meant leaving out some incredible answers- and some of my favorites were the ones that weren't exactly traditional "places."
Someone nominated the infamous I-10 speed bump at Geronimo, and I don't think I need to explain that one to anyone who has driven that stretch of freeway.
Another person suggested the orange traffic cones scattered throughout El Paso, which honestly might be our most consistently visible piece of public art.
There were some great pieces of El Paso history mentioned, too, including Eddie Guerrero's house and the home where Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry once lived.
Then there was The Hideaway on Montana.
That's one of those if you know, you know answers- and judging by the response, plenty of El Pasoans know!

A Landmark Doesn't Always Need a Plaque
That's probably my favorite thing about all of the responses.
When we hear the word "landmark," it's easy to picture historic buildings, monuments and places officially recognized for their importance. But locals have their own way of deciding which places become part of a city's identity.
Sometimes it's a building that's been around forever. Sometimes it's a business generations of El Pasoans remember. Sometimes it's something you use to give directions; sometimes it's just a speed bump.
The 12 places in this gallery may not all have official landmark status, but they've clearly earned something else: a permanent spot in El Pasoans' heart.
