Here’s a great opportunity to get the kids out of the house before intersession ends and the school year resumes on Monday.

El Paso County Parks and Recreation is sponsoring another Kid's Fish Derby at Ascarate Park this Saturday. And a lack of fishing experience or gear isn't a problem, either.

Fish Drop

The county did a fish drop on Tuesday filling up the big lake with 9-inch channel Catfish.

They've also suspended fishing in the big lake until Friday so chances are pretty good your child will get a few nibbles and bites.

If not from catfish than perhaps he or she will reel in a large mouth bass, sun perch, carp, or one of the other types of fish you'll generally find in Ascarate Lake.

The Ascarate Fishing Club is hosting the free fishing event for kids ages 3 - 16 this Saturday, October 15, and its members will happily teach kids fishing basics.

Fishing poles and bait will be provided for registered children to use during the event. Just take along a cap, sunscreen, bug spray, water, a camping chair or two, and your driver’s license to check out a pole and you're all set.
