Out of town slate features tough opponents
A trio of 6A squads hit the road and travel on Friday: Eastwood (1-1) at Odessa (1-0); Franklin (1-1) at Lubbock Monterey (0-2); and, Eastlake (1-1) at Liberty Hill (1-1).
Despite their loss to Odessa Permian at home last week (56-49), the Falcons flex a talented roster that should contend for a district crown. Quarterback Luke Lomeli has 706 passing yards and nine touchdowns already. Expect Friday's matchup against Liberty Hill to be high-scoring.
Franklin will hope to shake off a loss to one of the city's best teams in Del Valle (24-14) as they face a winless Lubbock Monterey team on Friday. The Cougars could use this road test to propel them into district play. They will need their run game, led by tailback Ernie Powers, to show up in a significant way.
After beating Chapin 49-34 in a shoot-out, Eastwood hits the road again and will take on a 1-0 Odessa High squad. The Bronchos have a bunch of talented skill position players on the field. Meanwhile, Eastwood has been able to find production in a balanced offensive attack led by quarterback Joseph Cox and running back Jayden Martinez.
Predictions: Eastwood 42 - Odessa 41; Eastlake 56 - Liberty Hill 53; Lubbock Monterey 42 - Franklin 35
Game of the week: Clint vs. Riverside
Despite a regime change with Riverside's coaching staff, the Rangers have started off strong this season. Sensational sophomore Carlos Rojas III is a dual-threat quarterback for Riverside and leads them on both sides (170 passing yards, 134 rushing). Clint is coming off a 48-6 loss to Gadsden last week and is looking to get right this week.
Prediction: Riverside 49 - Clint 21
Americas vs. Pebble Hills Preview
The two squads are winless entering Friday's game and something has to give.
Pebble Hills (0-2) is still looking for the first win under new head coach Ryan Warner. They fell to Midland High in a back-and-forth battle, 28-23, last week and they were shut out (7-0) the week before against Canutillo. Sophomore quarterback Joe Fernandez is really talented, but his receivers will need some more time to adjust. For now, they will pace their offense through running back Zereian Quarles (146 rushing yards).
Americas (0-1) lost a last-minute shocker to Hanks last week, 38-27. The Trailblazers rely on running back Cam'Ron Johnson (195 rushing yards) to keep them steady. Quarterback Ionah Raya relies on his dual threat game to get the offense going.
Prediction: Pebble Hills 28 - Americas 10
