Jimmy Kimmel Mocks El Paso TV Station KVIA with Video of On-Air Screw Up
This just in: KVIA ABC-7 has won the first award for “Excellence in Reporting” in 2023. Which would be quite an honor if it wasn’t being handed out by “Jimmy Kimmel Live”.
Excellence in Reporting is a recurring comedy feature that highlights clips of on-air goofs, gaffes and screw ups in television journalism, as well as news anchors and reporters doing and saying the darndest things.
Such are the perils of working in a business where every error and slip of the tongue has the potential of going from the living room to the internet.
Have You Seen This Man?
“This is from the ABC-7 news team in El Paso, Texas,” Kimmel informs the audience before adding, “winners of the first award this year for excellence in reporting.”
The video begins with weekend anchor Dylan McKim talking over a short video teaser of the stories they’ll be covering.
“2023 is just hours away and everyone around the world is getting ready to ring in the new year,” he says as video of people in downtown El Paso rolls. “And one local group is helping migrants downtown celebrate as well.”
“And have you seen this man?” co-anchor Rosemary Montañez asks rhetorically. “Federal authorities say he escaped from La Tuna Federal Prison and they need your help bringing him in.”
Only it wasn’t a mugshot of the escapee. It was video of recently deceased Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI.
Oh snap, someone is going to hell!
As the laughter died down, Kimmel deadpans, “I think I know how to find him, but you’re not going to like how to get there.”
“Not our proudest moment,” commented Montañez on social media. “Glad we can all laugh about it now.” Hey, like I always say, if you can’t laugh at yourself, I’ll do it for you.
