Ghost’s Tobias Forge: Nothing Defines an Artist Like First Few Albums – Interview
Some bands truly never stop working, and Swedish shock-rock group Ghost are no exception. Touring extensively through 2019 in support of 2018's Prequelle, the band's mastermind Tobias Forge has had an idea for their next album for around a year already. However, the frontman admits that nothing truly defines an artist like their first two albums.
Forge believes that "Cirice," off their third record Meliora, is the best work he's written to this day. "This is where your mind needs to be elastic, because you want to avoid writer's block," he tells Loudwire Nights. "But I think something you should strive for is to always wanna make your best song, and you always wanna make your best record."
On the other hand, Forge explains the process of a band putting out several records by comparing it to Disney's Star Wars series, in that the first three movies were monumental to its existence. "I really think that some of the new films are really good, but they will never compete with the three first ones," he says.
"That's how it is for every band...you cannot expect, for the rest of your life, to make significant records or films that will define you as a creator the same way that your first five or 10 did. But there are exceptions, of course."
Prequelle is Ghost's fourth and most successful studio album thus far, landing the group two No. 1 songs on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Songs chart with "Rats" and "Dance Macabre." The album itself also peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200.
