Texas Was Home to the Only Hotel Built Over Water
If you lived in Galveston, Texas before the 2010s, you will certainly remember the unique hotel that was built over the Gulf of Mexico. For years it was a staple on top of the Pleasure Pier at the intersection 25th Street and Seawall Boulevard & remains a truly unique piece of Texas history. Of course we're talking about...
Galveston's USS Flagship Hotel was the only hotel built over water
Now when we say "build over water", we DO MEAN that was BUILT...over the water. The 7 story, 225 room hotel was built in 1965 and it quickly became one of the "must go-to" hotels in Galveston. Names like Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin & Ted Nugent were some of the people who partied at the Flagship Hotel.
Looking at the footage from the inside of the hotel, you can see the incredible views that hotel guests were able to see during their stay.
The building was so tough, it was able to withstand most storms. Although there was one hurricane that WAS able to do so damage to the Flagship Hotel, and that was Hurricane Ike in September of 2008.
It was sadly after Ike's wrath that there was too much damage to salvage the hotel. On February 27, 2011, it was time to say goodbye to the Flagship Hotel...
The Pier reopened in 2012 & still stands today; although it's just called the Pleasure Pier. To this day, the USS Flagship Hotel remains the only hotel that was ever built over the water...in the water.
While the hotel is gone, there's still people that post their memories of visiting the hotel on Facebook & even sharing their home movies on YouTube.
