The inauguration of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris has come and gone, but for some lucky kindergartners in El Paso, they have a special reminder of that day! After learning about the election process and holding their own mock election, Barron Elementary School teacher Martha Tavarez wrote a letter to then President-elect Joe Biden and Dr. Jill Biden shortly after the election to congratulate him on behalf of her and her kindergarten class.

Tavarez and the kindergarten class received a response not only from President Biden but Vice President Harris as well. President Biden responded with “I received your letter and wanted to let you know how much I appreciate your kind words." He continued his letter with many of the messages of his vision for the future and how he remains “heartened by the spirit and resilience of the American people.” He ended it with: “Thanks again for writing, Martha. For keeping the faith in us and in the country we love, I am forever grateful to you.”

Over the summer, Tavarez wrote to then Vice President Elect Kamala Harris after hearing Harris talk about the importance of teachers and education. Harris also responded to Tavarez and her class.

This isn't the first time Tavarez has received letters from the nations leaders. Her first letter was to President Obama in 2015. Tavarez has a "Proud Moment Corner" where she has letters from Presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush and George H.W. Bush and former First Lady Melania Trump. Her goal now is to work with her class to write to both President Biden and Vice President Harris to get a letter with their official Presidential seals.
