If you like to pay in cash, you better use up all these particular bills quick because Walmart stores in El Paso, across Texas and elsewhere have stopped taking them.

I actually had my first experience with this the other day and it was at a Family Dollar store, not a Walmart. Banks themselves may be jumping on board with this new policy as well.

If you prefer cash, inspect the bills you have now for the sketchy ones and watch for them when you withdraw cash too.

Effective immediately, Walmart stores all over the country are refusing certain, $1 dollar bills.

Those bills that have tears, cut edges or those that are quite deteriorated as a result of the passage of time or humidity. These will no longer be accepted in stores, banks or ATMs, so if you have any… try to get rid of them as soon as possible.

This decision is driven by a need to modernize monetary systems and also to try to stop the counterfeiting of these bills, so, overall, it responds to a need to improve consumer confidence in the authenticity of the money in circulation. - unionrao.com

The idea is to thwart counterfeiters and other new security precautions will soon be going into effect. Among other things, the government plans to redesign and upgrade $50 bills next and then move on to the $20's. $5's and $100's will eventually get a makeover as well.

For now, ditch those tattered singles and start watching the condition of all the bills you have/accept a little more closely.
