An El Paso Sheriff's deputy was killed recently and scammers are already trying to capitalize on his death.

Deputy Pete Herrera was shot during a traffic stop and almost immediately, some bastards have begun trying to scam El Pasoans out of gift cards saying they are to benefit his family. The El Paso Sheriff's Office posted this announcement on their Facebook page:

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office has become aware of scams surrounding the passing of our brother Deputy Peter Herrera.

The scammers are calling individuals asking for donations to benefit Deputy Herrera’s family in the form of gift cards.

The only two legitimate fundraising campaigns at this time are the online fundraising campaigns organized by Adrian Gonzales on behalf of the Sheriff’s Office, and the El Paso County Sheriff’s Officers Association.

The Sheriff’s Office would like to make the public aware that representatives of the Sheriff’s Office will not solicit donations over the phone much less in the form of gift cards.
