El Paso Police Need Help Finding Hit & Run Driver

An El Paso motorcyclist was killed Sunday evening and police are looking for the driver of a vehicle that struck him during the accident.

Sunday evening, 38-year-old Martin De la Torre was traveling east on I-10 near Lomaland when, according to an article initially posted by KTSM, he veered left and struck the divider.

This flung him into the west bound lanes of I-10 where he was struck by a vehicle heading west. That vehicle continued on without stopping to render aid.

EPPD need help finding that vehicle and driver so they are asking anyone who was in the area or who may have any information regarding this accident or that vehicle to contact the Special Traffic Investigation, unit at (915) 212-4080.

As of July, the number of motorcycle accident deaths in El Paso was 15, nearly twice the number for the same time in 2021. Across Texas, in 2021, 519 bikers died in accidents and the numbers for 2022 are already up 75%.

Some accidents are unavoidable but most are VERY avoidable. Please follow this advice from TxDoT:

Take extra care when making a left turn. It is safest to let the motorcycle pass to avoid turning in front of the rider.
Pay special attention at intersections. Nearly one in three motorcycle fatalities happens at a roadway intersection.
Give driving your full attention. Even a momentary distraction, such as answering a phone call or changing the radio station, can have deadly consequences.
Look twice when changing lanes. Check mirrors, blind spots, and always use turn signals.
Give motorcycles room when passing them. Move over to the passing lane and don’t crowd the motorcyclist’s full lane.
Stay back. If you’re behind a motorcycle, always maintain a safe following distance. When a motorcyclist downshifts instead of applying the brake to slow down, it can catch drivers off guard since there are no brake lights to signal reduced speed.
Slow down. Obey posted speed limits and drive to conditions
