McDonalds French fries used to taste the best but then they changed the recipe. They're pretty good but you CAN still get that old school taste here in El Paso.

McDonalds French fries were legendary and, while they are still really good, when they changed the recipe, they messed up a good thing. That's just my opinion but fear not old school fry lovers ... there's a place here in El Paso that's putting taste over calories.

What made the fries at Mickey Dee's so special was the way they were fried ... they used beef tallow. A very tasty substance that gave the fries an extra depth of flavor. In 1990, a bunch of health freaks decided it wasn't healthy and McDonalds caved, switching to vegetable oil.

It cost them, (McDonalds stock fell 8.3%), and while they did flip flop a little between different vegetable oils, they have steadfastly refused to go back to beef tallow.

Fortunately for El Paso old school fry guys ... and gals ... someone around here "ain't scairt" of a little extra trans fat. In fact, folks all over Texas and the USA can enjoy tasty tallow fried fries at Buffalo Wild Wings.

It's worth pointing out that Buffalo Wild Wings uses the word "shortening" instead of "tallow" on its info sheet. Tallow is essentially the same thing as shortening. In addition to tallow being softer at room temperature while shortening is more solid, tallow is a fat that is always rendered from an animal while shortening can come from other sources like plants. - tastingtable.com
