Why do I keep writing articles about how bad the COVID-19 numbers are? Because they keep going up and apparently people just aren't getting it. We got complacent and ignored the fact that COVID-19 is still a thing. Well, here is how that has worked out for us. We are now toward the top of the list when it comes to active COVID-19 cases in major cities in the United States.

The Seattle Times posted about how well Seattle was doing with it's COVID-19 cases. Unfortunately for us in El Paso, we are toward the top of that list. Here is the whole list, with the number of cases per 1,000.

  1. Nashville - 41.8
  2. El Paso - 33.9
  3. Memphis - 33.7
  4. Phoenix - 31.6
  5. Houston - 31.6
  6. Jacksonville - 31.5
  7. Dallas - 31.2
  8. Las Vegas - 29.9
  9. Chicago - 29.6
  10. San Antonio - 28.8
  11. New York City - 28.7
  12. Los Angeles - 27.3
  13. Baltimore - 26.3
  14. Charlotte - 25.7
  15. Boston - 24.8
  16. Fort Worth - 24.0
  17. Columbus - 23.9
  18. Philadelphia - 23.5
  19. Austin - 23.2
  20. Oklahoma City - 23.1
  21. Louisville - 22.8
  22. Indianapolis - 22.5
  23. Washington D.C. - 21.7
  24. Detroit - 21.6
  25. Denver - 18.3
  26. San Diego - 14.1
  27. San Francisco - 12.8
  28. San Jose - 11.1
  29. King County - 9.9
  30. Portland - 8.9
  31. Seattle - 7.4

Do these numbers spell gloom and doom for El Paso? No, but combine these numbers with the other rising numbers, including the amount of COVID-19 related patients in area hospitals. As of the time I'm writing this, we are down to just 9 total ICU beds in the area. So I'm going to end this the way I find myself ending the majority of my articles at this point. Follow the guidelines set forth by the CDC and local officials. Wash your hands, keep your distance, and wear your mask. It's really not all that difficult.
