Beloved Texas Grandma Publishes First Book After Going Viral
One Texas grandma is celebrating the release of her very first book inspired by the love she has for her grandson, and the help of her viral video series! Dr. Christine Durfee of El Paso, Texas is a name you might recognize; last year, Dr. Durfee, or "Mema" as she's lovingly referred to as, touched the hearts of many when she began uploading story time videos to YouTube.
Dr. Durfee thought of a wonderful and unique way to have story time with her grandson, Dawson, who lives out of state, by creating a YouTube channel, Stories with Mema, so that she could read stories to her grandson even while they were states apart. The story went viral after Durfee's daughter, Sarah Penewit, shared this adorable video of Mema reading a bedtime story.
From there, Mema's channel grew! Mema now has over 300 videos of story time, and over 12,000 subscribers. Turns out, we're never too old for story time with Mema! Now, Dr. Durfee has officially released her first book, "Tummy Heart Commotion: When Dawson Meets Dood" the first in a series with a goal of helping children identify their feelings.
Obviously, the main character is Dawson, Mema's grandson, and features Dood, their real life dog! Speaking with ABC News' Danny New, Dr. Durfee explains how it will help families with emotions.
Durfee, who is a Ph.D and an adult, child and family therapist specializing in autism, family systems, and most DSM diagnosis- obviously knows what she's doing- and knows that this is of a great benefit to Dawson- and now, she's helping other children get the same benefit!
You can order Mema's book here. Eventually, she'll read her own book to all of her virtual grandchildren. If you want more bedtime stories, you can find Mema's YouTube channel here.
