Rusk Elementary School celebrates their centennial this year and they have several things planned to celebrate hitting the big 100.

The school, located at 3601 North Copia, will open up to alumni and the general public today at 1:30. Activities will include slide shows, a commemorative dance number and, of course, a birthday cake! Today is also "dress like you're 100" day for the kids and there will be a balloon release to close out the ceremonies.

Rusk Elementary School was named after Thomas Jefferson Rusk, a Republic Of Texas hero and United States Senator. Rusk also served as a supreme court chief justice, was offered the postmaster general position and was elected President Pro Tem by a special session of the United States Senate.

Generations of El Pasoans have attended Rusk since it opened in 1916.
