It's almost ofrenda season.

The City of El Paso Dia de los Muertos Festival returns to downtown El Paso on the last Saturday of October.

The day-long event will include the popular and highly anticipated Day of the Dead parade featuring a cavalcade of catrinas, catrins, calaveras and larger-than-life Mojigangas.

Día de los Muertos, observed November 1 and 2, honors loved ones who have passed with festively decorated alters commemorating the lives lived.

Ofrendas, or offerings, of their favorite foods and beverages are typically placed on the alter, as well as photos of the dearly departed, and memorabilia.

Contrary to the day’s name, Day of the Dead is more joyous than macabre. It’s a day of celebration that is far from a gloomy affair, and there’s no better example than the largest Day of the Dead celebration in the city.
