History of the Sandwich

The sandwich is arguably one of America’s most popular lunchtime meals. While all most of us know about our favorite sandwich is how delicious it is, there’s a bit of royal history behind its invention.

According to the company website, this is the story of the birth of the convenient hand-held meal:

As legend has it, in 1762, John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, invented the meal that changed dining forever. It is said he was playing cards and did not want to leave the gaming table to eat. He asked for a serving of roast beef to be placed between two slices of bread so he could eat with his hands.

Some 250 years later, the “World’s Greatest Hot Sandwich” chain was founded by another Lord John Montagu; this one the 11th Earl of Sandwich and a direct descendant of the 4th Earl of Sandwich himself.
